Neutrino Masses from Cosmological Probes
نویسنده
چکیده
There is a renewed interest in constraining the sum of the masses of the three neutrino flavours by using cosmological measurements. Solar, atmospheric, and reactor neutrino experiments have confirmed neutrino oscillations, implying that neutrinos have non-zero mass, but without pinning down their absolute masses. While it is established that the effect of light neutrinos on the evolution of cosmic structure is small, the upper limits derived from large-scale structure could help significantly to constrain the absolute scale of the neutrino masses. It is also important to know the sum of neutrino masses as it is degenerate with the values of other cosmological parameters, e.g. the amplitude of fluctuations and the primordial spectral index. A summary of cosmological neutrino mass limits is given. Current results from cosmology set an upper limit on the sum of the neutrino masses of ∼ 1 eV, somewhat depending on the data sets used in the analyses and assumed priors on cosmological parameters. It is important to emphasize that the total neutrino mass (‘hot dark matter’) is derived assuming that the other components in the universe are baryons, cold dark matter and dark energy. We assess the impact of neutrino masses on the matter power spectrum, the cosmic microwave background, peculiar velocities and gravitational lensing. We also discuss future methods to improve the mass upper limits by an order of magnitude. PACS numbers: 95.35.+d, 14.60.Pq, 98.62.Py, 98.80.Es Neutrino Masses from Cosmological Probes 2

Measuring neutrino masses and dark energy with weak lensing tomography
Surveys of weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies will be one of the key cosmological probes in the future. We study the ability of such surveys to constrain neutrino masses and the equation of state parameter of the dark energy, focussing on how tomographic information can improve the sensitivity to these parameters. We also provide a detailed discussion of systematic effects pertinent...
متن کاملNeutrinos as cosmic messengers
I briefly review the current status of neutrino oscillation parameters and discuss the role of neutrinos as cosmological probes, that could possibly induce the baryon asymmetry as well as the dark matter in the Universe. I comment on the origin of neutrino masses in seesaw-type and low-scale models and mention some of their laboratory signals. STATUS OF NEUTRINO OSCILLATIONS The discovery of ne...
متن کاملCosmological bounds on masses of neutrinos and other thermal relics
With the advent of precision data, cosmology has become an extremely powerful tool for probing particle physics. The prime example of this is the cosmological bound on light neutrino masses. Here I review the current status of cosmological neutrino mass bounds as well as the various uncertainties involved in deriving them. From WMAP, SDSS, and Lyman-α forest data an upper bound on the sum of ne...
متن کاملProbing neutrino masses with future galaxy redshift surveys
We perform a new study of future sensitivities of galaxy redshift surveys to the free-streaming effect caused by neutrino masses, adding the information on cosmological parameters from measurements of primary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Our reference cosmological scenario has nine parameters and three different neutrino masses, with a hierarchy imposed by oscillation ...
متن کاملCosmological Constraints on Neutrino Masses and Mixings
The bounds on neutrino masses and mixing that follows from the data on light element abundances, large scale structure formation, and angular fluctuations of cosmic microwave background radiation are analyzed. The role of neutrino oscillations in BBN and the bounds on cosmological lepton asymmetry are discussed.
